Student Uniform / Dress Code Policy

Please note that our new Student Uniform / Dress Code Policy was updated and officially adopted as of April 23, 2010.

Knowing that a safe and orderly environment is the mark of an effectively achieving school, SJEA has formulated the following uniform and dress code policies in regards to what is acceptable and what is unacceptable in the manner of dress and personal appearance.

Official School Colors:
Navy Blue, Forrest Green, Burgundy, White and Tan
Uniform tops must be Navy Blue, Forrest Green, Burgundy or White
Uniform bottoms must be Tan or Navy Blue

Uniform Bottoms
  Acceptable
  • Cotton or corduroy pants and jumpers
• Shorts and Skirts – length must be mid-thigh or longer
• Girl & Boy Scout uniforms (on meeting days only)
• Short or Pants (mandatory on PE days).
   
  Unacceptable
  • Pants with holes, too baggy, too tight
• Jeans, jean material
• Fleece, sweats, or nylon wear
• Skirts or shorts above mid-thigh
• Skirts on PE Days
• Excessively faded colors


Uniform Tops
  Acceptable
  • Polo shirts
• Button-down oxford shirts
• Turtlenecks
• If visible, layered undershirts must be in uniform color
• SJEA T-Shirts
• SJEA-affiliated shirts (must be Academy specific)
• Girl & Boy Scout uniforms (on meeting days only)
   
  Unacceptable
  • Plaid, print or stripes
• Shirts that reveal midriff (stomach must be covered at all times)
• Plain T-Shirts or T-Shirts not affiliated with SJEA
• Spaghetti straps, single straps
• Low necklines, tank tops, tube tops and halter tops
• Holes or unacceptable size (too baggy or too tight)
• Excessively faded colors
• Knot’s tied in the back to tighten shirts


Footwear
  Acceptable
  • Shoes that fit securely on the foot.
• Tennis shoes (mandatory on PE days)
• Socks must be worn at all times
• Tights or leggings must be solid uniform colors
   
  Unacceptable
  • Socks, tights, or leggings that are distracting
• Open-back shoes
• Shoes with wheels
• Heels over 1 inch
• Slip on shoes on PE days


Sweaters, Light Jackets, Windbreakers, Zip-up & Pullover Sweatshirts
  Acceptable
  • Uniform color
• Team names, brand names, and small designs
• Heavy Jackets can be any color
   
  Unacceptable
  • Non uniform colors


Hair
  Acceptable
  • Hair must be neat and clean with no unnatural colors
   
  Unacceptable
  • Extreme hairdos that would be disruptive (i.e. mohawks, shaved designs, spiked hair styles longer than one inch, etc.)


Accessories
  Acceptable
  • Simple and sensible accessories
• Piercing of the ears only (quarter inch plugs or smaller)
• Visors, headbands, or hats worn appropriately during recess, lunch and PE only
   
  Unacceptable
  • Anything that causes a distraction or can cause personal injury (i.e. extra large hoop earrings, spiked earplugs, ear taper/stretcher, etc.)
• Spikes, chains or large jewelry of any kind
• Suspenders

Free Dress Policy and School Sponsored Activities:
Parents/guardians and students will be notified about scheduled dress down days. Students shall come to school looking clean and neat, and exhibiting grooming that will not be a health and/or safety hazard to the student or others. SJEA prohibits any dress or grooming that in the Administration’s judgment may interfere with normal school operations.

Students’ street clothes must follow these guidelines:
• Clothing must be neat, clean, and free from holes.
• Pants or jeans must be the correct size and worn appropriately at all times.
• Not permitted are clothing items with inappropriate or derogatory logos or slogans, pictures, emblems, or writing that is lewd, offensive, vulgar, obscene, or imply profanity; or that depict or advertises alcohol/tobacco substances.
• All tops must have sleeves. No halter tops, spaghetti straps, tank tops or muscle shirts.
• For safety reasons, footwear must have enclosed toes and heels, sandals, flip flops, clogs and mules are not permitted. Tennis shoes with wheels are not allowed at any time.
• Baseball hats or head coverings are not allowed in the classroom.

Backpacks:
• All backpacks must be able to fit under desk
• Backpacks should remain with the students at all times
• No inappropriate writing or graphics
• Personal property & grooming items must be kept in students backpack

Consequences for violating the dress code policy will be:
First Violation
• A Notice Sent Home
• Student supplied with loaner uniform *
Second Violation
• Second notice sent home
• Loaner uniform provided *
• Lunch time detention is assigned
Third Violation
• Parent called to bring in appropriate uniform for student to change into
• Lunch time detention is assigned
Repeat Offenders
• Disciplinary action may result in suspension for non-compliance

*Inappropriate clothing which caused the infraction will be confiscated and kept until the loaner uniform is returned. Student must return the “loner clothing” or will be billed $10.00.

According to research, a school dress code:

• positively affects student academic performance and their interaction with other students
• positively affects classroom discipline and decreases disruptions
• improves school climate by decreasing the negative effects of peer pressure and
• increases school spirit and pride!
